What is really in Orlando’s tap water.
OUC — Orlando’s water utility — publishes a detailed water quality report every year, and it makes good reading if you know what to look for. Here is the plain-English version: Orlando draws from the Lower Floridan Aquifer, deep limestone wells that load the water with calcium and magnesium (OUC’s average hardness: 129 ppm, about 7 grains per gallon). The water is disinfected with chlorine — legally required to keep it microbiologically safe in the pipes — averaging 1.2 ppm in 2025 against a federal limit of 4 ppm. Chlorine reacting with natural organic matter forms disinfection byproducts (TTHMs, HAA5, HAA9), which are regulated and reported. OUC states its water meets all federal and state standards, its system has no lead service lines, and lead risk comes from older customer plumbing after the meter.
