Lead gets into tap water through pipes — not the treatment plant.

Here's what most people get wrong about lead in drinking water: it doesn't come from the treatment plant. It gets in inside the pipes — the service line running from the street to your house, and the plumbing inside your walls. Lead solder and older brass fixtures can leach lead into water that's been sitting in the pipes, which means one home on a street can have an issue while the neighbor's tests clean.

Why your utility's report can't answer this.

OUC and Orange County Utilities publish annual water-quality reports with system-wide results. Those reports measure water in the distribution system — they do not, and cannot, test the plumbing inside your specific home. A clean system-wide report says nothing about the pipes feeding your kitchen tap.

Older homes deserve a closer look.

Federal restrictions on lead in plumbing took effect in 1986, so homes built before then are more likely to have lead solder or older fixtures. If that's your house, lead is worth checking — but checking means a certified laboratory test, not a quick strip test. For drinking and cooking water, look for treatment certified to NSF/ANSI 53 (filters certified for lead reduction) or a reverse osmosis system certified to NSF/ANSI 58.
