- Bromate: 3.7 ppb — legal limit 10.
- Chlorine: 1.2 ppm — in every glass, every shower.
And Orange County's 2025 report — covering systems that buy OUC water — adds radium 226+228 at 1.5 pCi/L, a naturally occurring radioactive mineral from the aquifer rock your water sits in.
"No violations" is not the same as "nothing there."
The Environmental Working Group compared OUC's government test data against health guidelines set by public-health authorities. Seven contaminants came back above those guidelines: trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids (HAA5 and HAA9), bromate, hexavalent chromium, combined radium, and 1,3-butadiene. Federal legal limits weigh treatment cost and feasibility, and many were set decades ago. Health guidelines ask one question: what level carries little to no health risk?
